And good light!Without good quality, distortion-free light, you can\\’t tell if the ingredients you\\’re cooking with are fresh. We can\\’t tell when vegetables and fruit are beginning to wilt, and we can\\’t detect in time when baked goods are beginning to mould. The kitchen is a very specific place in terms of lighting. This is because we need the overall space itself to be lit. To do this, we need to have illuminated work surfaces. We also need to be able to see well into the pots on the stove. If we want a more luxurious kitchen, we also need to take into account the lighting of the storage areas and cupboards.Nowadays, with the popularity of light sources in the form of LED systems on the rise, it is no problem to illuminate virtually any place. LED bulbs and strips are so low in power consumption that there is no reason to skimp on quantity. With any type of lighting, we need to consider its intensity. In cabinets, a low light is quite sufficient to illuminate the spaces deep inside the cabinet. It\\’s quite enough for us to recognise that it\\’s not sugar but flour in the back, and to know where to reach for the wok.It\\’s different looking into a pot on the stove. A lot of steam rises from these pots when cooking. So we need a special light to penetrate that steam and illuminate the bubbling contents of the pot. But again, we don\\’t need a powerful spotlight. The point is to detect the colour of the food being prepared, its condition, whether lumps have formed or whether the spoon we want to taste the food with is already dipped. The overall lighting of the kitchen is to enable us to move around the kitchen safely. It should not be gloomy or intimate. It should be of just the right intensity to allow us to discern details on the opposite side of the kitchen. That\\’s when we\\’re looking around to see where our knives are stowed or our skimmers are hanging.It\\’s different with the work surface. It has to be lit very well. The temperature of the light that is used for this type of lighting should be as close as possible to the temperature of normal daylight. This will avoid distorting the colours of the food and overlooking any emerging wilting. And, of course, good lighting will increase workplace safety. There is never enough light in the kitchen. It creates a sense of well-being at work and promotes the joy of cooking.
